One thing you may not realize if you’re an outsider traveling to Dallas, Texas, is there’s a larger percentage of liberal thinkers than you’d suspect. Although big business and big hair may be what you see from the outside, Dallas County is the only county in the state of Texas to elect the Democratic candidate for presidency this past election. That’s counting Travis County, home of Austin, Texas, which has the reputation of being so liberal-friendly because of all the slackers who stick around after they’re done with college and the California-folk looking for affordable housing in a culture they can tolerate. It just goes to illustrate the old adage, “you can’t judge a book by its cover,” or a city by its persona.

One thing that’s become popular in cities across the country and is very big in Dallas is the farmer’s market. While the liberal folk of Dallas County are raging about the evils of “big corn,” they’re flocking to stores like Whole Foods and Central Market to buy organic produce from big grocers. Others see the irony and head for the Dallas Farmers Market or one of the area Four Seasons Markets or Eden’s Organic Garden Center or any number of other options. But the popularity is not all political. Some of us just like good food.

I followed along with Wade last summer when he was working on the organic farm up in Maine. Naysayers like to think that an organic label on produce is just a marketing excuse to jack up prices, but Wade can tell you. A lot of hard work goes into making produce the organic way without all the crazy chemicals, and the profit margin is pretty slim.
